4 Security Mistakes You Should Not Be Making

4 Security Mistakes You Should Not Be Making

There are many important elements to cybersecurity, but some mistakes are significantly more costly than others. Today, we want to highlight some of the particularly egregious infractions that you can make regarding your cybersecurity measures.

Below are four cybersecurity issues that could lead to much larger problems if you don’t address them accordingly.

Failure to Train Employees

If you don't train your employees, they won't intuitively understand the finer points of cybersecurity. Therefore, training your employees on how to approach certain areas of cybersecurity properly can pay off in spades and reduce the risk that they will do something silly, like expose your organization to a phishing threat. Be sure to train your team to identify and respond to threats that could disrupt your business and its operations.

Failure to Back Up Data

If you’re not backing up your data, quite frankly, you’re asking for something bad to happen. The risk of doing business in today’s increasingly complex technological environment has never been greater, as something as simple as a security breach or a hardware failure could derail operations. Be sure to take data backups to combat this threat. We recommend that data backups occur multiple times throughout the day, with the data backups being stored in various digital and physical locations, both on-site and off-site. The cloud should be leveraged in some capacity, and all of these locations should be protected and secured with the highest of scrutiny.

Failure to Prepare for Every Scenario

With technology, anything is possible. Well, not anything… but you get the point we are trying to make. If you don’t consider every possible issue that could result from poor network security, then you are at the mercy of the most creative and dangerous threats out there. For example, remote work presents more opportunities for cybercriminals to attack your organization through unsecured devices employees use while out of the office. Don’t let a lack of foresight be what brings your business down. Keep an eye on the security industry to ensure you’re not overlooking potential avenues for threats within your organization’s network, and be strategic and proactive with how you choose to implement security measures.

Failure to Create a Cybersecurity Culture

Security is not just the problem of your business’ IT department or security solution provider; it should concern all employees, including upper management and C-suite executives. Anyone can become a target, and any potential target should know how to approach cybersecurity threats. Don’t expect your employees to act with security in mind; lead by example and take it on yourself.
