Keeping Your Keyboard as Clean as Possible

Keeping Your Keyboard as Clean as Possible

The keyboard is one of the most utilized computer accessories; and, one of the most disgusting. If you don’t make an effort to keep your keyboard clean, it can get pretty gnarly pretty quickly. In this week’s blog, we discuss how best to keep your keyboard clean.

Turn Off and Unplug Your Keyboard

Before starting the cleaning process, it is crucial to turn off your computer and unplug the keyboard. This ensures your safety and prevents any accidental damage to your computer.

Shake Out Loose Debris

Hold the keyboard upside down and gently shake it to remove any loose debris such as crumbs, dust, or hair that may have accumulated between the keys. Alternatively, you can use compressed air or a small handheld vacuum cleaner to dislodge and remove the debris.

Use a Microfiber Cloth

Dampen a microfiber cloth with water or a mild cleaning solution. Make sure the cloth is not dripping wet, as excessive moisture can damage the keyboard. Gently wipe the surface of the keys, paying special attention to the areas between the keys. For stubborn stains, lightly dampen a cotton swab with a cleaning solution and gently rub the affected area.

Clean the Keycaps

To clean the keycaps, you can use a keycap puller or a small tool like a toothpick. Carefully remove the keycaps one by one and clean them individually. Fill a bowl with warm water and a mild detergent, then soak the keycaps for a few minutes. Scrub them gently with a soft brush or cloth to remove any grime or stains. Rinse the keycaps thoroughly with clean water and let them air dry before reattaching them to the keyboard.

Disinfect the Keyboard

To ensure proper hygiene, it is important to disinfect your keyboard regularly. Use a disinfectant wipe or a mixture of isopropyl alcohol and water to sanitize the surface of the keyboard. Make sure the cloth or wipe is not dripping wet and avoid using excessive amounts of liquid. Wipe down the keys and the surface of the keyboard, paying extra attention to the areas that are frequently touched.

Allow the Keyboard to Dry

After cleaning and disinfecting, allow the keyboard to air dry completely before plugging it back in. This will prevent any moisture from damaging the keyboard or causing malfunctions.

Once it’s dry you can plug it back in and use it as normal. The more often you clean your keyboard, the longer it will last and the less you will have to worry about health issues and other problems that can pop up.
